Successful FAILure
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Failure is the label
Attached to an outcome
We least expected
Failure is the name
We give a person
We think is done
Failure is the stigma
We avoid at every turn
That sucks out all the fun
Failure is the thief
That stalks every dream
Preventing some from seeing the sun
Failure is the notion
We had a right to predict outcomes
Where no precedence exists
Failure is in need
Of a makeover
So it becomes a familiar friend
Failure can be seen as
First Attempt In Learning
What has never been tried
Failure can be seen as
Further Attempts In Learning
Inspiring yet another try
Failure can be seen as
Forever Acquiring Important Lessons
Informing what to no longer try
Failure can be seen as
Courage to learn and not give in
The vital ingredient to success
There are always different ways to look at what people consider failure and those who always come at it from a negative perspective are missing out on the possibility of leveraging the same experience as stepping stones to success. The mind's bias is to keep us safe, so if failure is seen as a danger, it will try and help us avoid any situation that may carry the possibility of failure, which unfortunately also blocks the path to success.
If we internalise failure and assume it as our identity, we start to see ourselves as failures and take what happened in one aspect of our lives and spread the effect to other areas, looking for failure in everything or ceasing to try new things for fear of failure. This can create a negative spiral and self-fulfilling prophecy of failings that stifles our creative energy.
Behind the internalisation of failure may lie the belief that we are not good enough to deserve success, so failure is all we learn to expect. If we hold that we are good enough and no amount of failure can change that, we have a foundation from which to reframe failure to success.
What valuable lesson have you learnt from a recent "failure"?
Anxiety
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
The anxiety of imperfection
What a notion
To aspire perfection
To avoid falling short
Of a mark we can't agree on
On the assumption it's what
We are here for
Missing the point
We need imperfection
The playground of maturation
Yet we keep reaching
That anxiety might cease
Anxiety can be experienced when the mind has fixated on a perspective of reality that appears threatening to your well-being. There are however other less threatening versions of reality that it has filtered out of your consciousness. In such circumstances, it is helpful to have people in your life who can hold space for you and expand that horizon so you can access a wider pool of reality.
Perfection is a matter of perception and is therefore not absolute from person to person or even for the same individual. What you consider perfect in one moment may cease to be so when you are in a different state influenced by varying circumstances. It would therefore be a shame if you suffered emotional turmoil and restricted the expression of your creative energy because you are worried about achieving "perfection".
Perfection is slippery and subjective and we self-generate anxiety when we try and hold ourselves against such a standard in an attempt to please or impress others. It is more important that you enjoy the experience and outcome of creating and if others enjoy the output then that is a bonus, but you are not in control of that.
The pursuit of a goal is more important than achieving it if we place greater value on who we are becoming as a result of the process. The process opens up opportunities for self-discovery and recognition of our greater potential and resilience.
Where are you experiencing anxiety in pursuit of perfection?
You brave magnificent beast
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
There are those days
Those dark and dreary days
There seems no reason to awake
The gloom descends and the body consents
What would be the point of getting set
Drawing from wells so deep
Filled with courage so true
A reason found for daring to contend
The brave and magnificent finds the strength
To arise and face the day ahead
There is joy in freedom. Gratitude is a great way to start the day and welcome it as a gift to be celebrated.
We find our own reasons to rise and face the day ahead not knowing what it may bring but knowing whatever we are able to do in that day, we will accept as enough.
Being vulnerable to share your story helps you connect with and inspire others powerfully
Happiness is enjoying and celebrating your experience in its unfolding
What makes you grateful for the gift of today?
Prison
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Caught in a Prison of my own making
Erected with bars of my own design
No obvious way out
The original intent to protect me
Now conspires to constrain me
Hostage to that which was meant to preserve me
Living under the sentence of its blackmail
Afraid to reveal its ploy to the world
Thriving only possible through freedom
From this persistent tyranny
Reframing this scene to a new reality
Where fear no longer terrorises me
Firing up brain cells to mobilise positive energy
Signalling the chance to grow instead
Getting curious about what triggers me
Fact-checking elaborate tales of impending travesty
Mitigating true concerns
To feel the fear and press through
To serve the world from a place of liberty
The need to people-please can hold you back in a prison of your own making. Getting free is a process that may take dismantling it one bar at a time.
It is not unconditional love if you have to hide who you are to be accepted, that is too high a price to pay.
Contrary to our misgivings about showing our true self, flaws and all; people actually love relating to you with your imperfections. It is what makes us human.
Set yourself free to be uniquely you, a gift to the world. Truth is more powerful than deceit, you pay a higher price for the latter.
Where are you holding yourself back in search of acceptance?
Revealed
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
The universe said to me
Be revealed
So others could see
What lies beneath
Who is behind the scenes
That no one else has seen
Cause I won't pull back the screen
To see and be seen
It is possible to adorn an armour of respectability for fear of being rejected, thereby shielding the world from experiencing your true self through a filter of false respectability.
Those to whom you have been sent are left waiting for the real you to be revealed. When you start showing up with your true frequency, they will resonate with you.
Fully accept, love and give full expression to who you are and you will inspire others to do likewise.
Stand aligned with who you see yourself to be as life is too short to be what does not represent your deepest truth in an attempt to be what others expect you to be.
Being true to living from your heart is a gift only you can give yourself. Don't give it away by pandering to what you perceive to be others' expectations which may be your projections
Don't try and mould others' identities either, be free and afford others the freedom to show up as they are.
Not everyone will accept your authentic expression, do not change to suit them, those who love you will accept you for who you are now. Those you have shed were friends to a hologram that no longer exists.
Where are you afraid to be you and presenting a persona instead?
