Invisible problem
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Ever tried solving a problem
The kind, you are not willing to have?
The one that represents your inconvenient truth
You walk right past it in the morning
Never daring to take a second look
Keep walking, keep hoping
One day you get up and it's moved
To a city so far from you
To a place way out of view
If it dare to look you in the eye
You would pretend
It was who you never knew
Then you wake up the next day
And its right back where you never left it
That problem you are not willing to have
The one you are afraid to acknowledge
Gets bigger as the days go by
Feeding off the plate of your inattention
Drinking from the cup of your denial
Day after day it balloons till it fills the room
Dancing badly to the tunes of your own silence
Till the tremors shake you to the core
Till in your own space you can move no more
Squeezing you till breathing became a chore
Measuring itself in the mirror of your avid glances
Weighing itself on the scale of your underestimation
Invisible in the world of your fantasies
At large in the world of your reality
There it was free to do as it willed
Haunting and taunting, daring and mocking
Enjoying all the benefits while paying no rent
You wanting to give it "what for", but dare not
That problem that you could not solve
The one you could ignore no more
Cause the only way to reach your door
Was to eat the problem piece by piece
Till it was no more
We can waste a lot of energy and time trying avoid/suppress things that would be much easier to deal with at the onset. The alternative is to worry and get anxious which will affect our well-being.
The longer we ignore a problem the bigger it is likely to become, till we can ignore it no more.
When the Universe wants to use a situation as a gift to evolve our consciousness, we don't get a pass. It will keep coming back in different guises till we pass through, learn and grow. It is an opportunity to discover how resilient we are.
We may be procrastinating because of the mind's unreliable predictions of doom about what it would take to deal with the problem or the potential outcome.
Take your time to eat that problem piece by piece to avoid indigestion.
Which elephant growing in your room, have you been ignoring?
Had To
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
When I had to
I did not want to
Now I don't have to
It is a pleasure
To do so
Having a sense that you are powerless in choosing if something needs to be done, can result in resistance to doing it, resulting in creative avoidance techniques like procrastination.
How you frame a task can create resistance. If you change "had to" to "get to" compulsion changes to privilege which in turn creates a positive desire to do it.
Removing compulsion reduces emotional pressure and creates freedom and pleasure in the doing of the thing.
We can also decide to either delegate the task or decide it does not need to be done after all.
Sometimes we don't feel like doing something because of our mind's predictions about the potential outcome only for the reality of it to turn out different from what was predicted. When resistance arises to doing something, check in with yourself regarding what is being predicted and get curious about how true that is likely to be.
Sometimes some things just need to be done in service of others that doesn't feel great at the time but yield positive outcomes in the end, so we can use that to motivate us into doing the task.
How can you reframe the task you have been avoiding to create motivation for getting it done?
Who?
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Who made the rules?
Who keeps the scores?
Who set the bar?
Who jumps over it?
Who limbos under it?
Who awards the medals?
Who applauds the winner?
Who heckles the loser?
Who is lifted by the highs?
Who is down-trodden by the lows?
Who was there before the game?
Who will be there when it is done?
Whose face is reflected back
In the flowing river of life?
We have ultimate agency for how we respond to things that happen to us, including those that may heckle us from the sidelines while we are in the arena of life.
When you start kicking yourself for not following the rules, don't forget who adopted the rules in the first place. You have the power to give yourself the space to be human.
The real you is the conscious awareness beneath the multiple identities you have adopted over time to navigate this human experience.
What step towards self-compassion can you take today, to embrace your humanity?
Life in spaces
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Can you see them
Scenes of beauty
Lines of meaning
Words of wisdom
Sounds of symphony
So easily missed
The spaces, punctuations, and the silent pauses
Unseen heroes of every masterpiece
Without which no sense exists
The essence of life hidden in those spaces
When we slow right down and take in the whole vista of art, written works and music, we get to appreciate the spaces, punctuations and silent pauses that make the beauty, meaning and musical pleasure possible.
When our minds are so busy making meaning and reacting to their expectations, it is difficult to experience the beauty and the things that make them possible.
If you can't see it yet, maybe you are either not quite enough or ready to receive it. Keep open and in due season it shall come.
Every human is a masterpiece capable of meaning-making, perceiving, understanding, inspiration, imagination and taking actions that lead to real-world transformation. It takes an appreciation of every part of use, even the ones that seem insignificant for this masterpiece to operate as it does.
What are the things in the masterpiece of your life that you have taken for granted?
