Then it hit me
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Wow, words spoken in due season
Must have opened and read my mail
It was certainly to me it was speaking
Hit the proverbial nail right on the head
Don't think the words could have been better said
Pretty sure it had previously been said again and again
But when the student was ready, the message did "appear"
What we get out of a message or any information we direct our attention to is based on how ready we are to receive it, where we are in life, what's happening and whether we have the foundational premise in place to gain meaning from the object of our attention.
Something that we have heard before but not paid attention to may suddenly come across as profound because of where we are, while others may not think much of it.
When we create the space to listen and learn, our openness and intention create an opportunity for us to receive inspiration and insight about things that we had heard before but are hearing in a new light because of the shift in us.
What is the most profound insight you recently received from a source you were least expecting?
Reframe
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
This happened
It means this
Then again
It could mean that
I could experience
This
I could experience
That
Happening is
What it is
Experiences
Another thing
The power of
A reframe
The gift
of choice
Opening up
A world
Of alternative
Possibilities
Our state can impact the meaning we give to our circumstances which then influences the experience we have of it. We can get curious about reframing the meaning which could in turn shift our experiences of the same set of circumstances which would result in a state shift.
Reframes are not a tool for escaping the reality of our circumstances but rather to open us up to other considerations of the mind's meaning-making. The mind can often filter out other possibilities that are available in favour of worst-case scenarios of its choosing.
Being aware of the layers of circumstances, meaning-making, experience and your state and their relationship to each other can be the difference between being stuck in a downward spiral or climbing out of it.
You cannot convince someone into a reframe but you can model it to them, especially if you share similar circumstances. This may encourage them to be curious about the meaning you bring to your circumstances.
Which version of reality has your meaning-making mind been serving up to you recently, that is not serving you?
Be Still
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Be still
The lake awaits
With mysteries therein
Seeking discovery
Insights so placed
To set you free
From suffering
You will know
Once the ripples cease
Mysteries surround us every day and we don't always know what they mean but we still have to deal with it. The mind comes up with so many stories to make sense of things. It is more interested in resolution than the truth, so it is happy to make stuff up that makes sense to its quest for logic even if it is not true.
There are some things we are better off not knowing for our sanity and then there are things we get to know, that we may or may not like but give us closure.
Most of our suffering results from the emotional roller coaster that the mind creates through its made-up stories, its unfounded predictions and expectations.
To deal with it better, we can:
1. Recognise when it is not still and there are disturbances of the mind
2. Get curious about what is being believed that is causing the disturbance
3. Reconnect to the deepest part of us that is okay and aware of what is happening with the mind
4. Re-centre through breath and create an intention to receive any insights that may inspire any further action
The truth of our deepest being is peace and conscious breathing brings us back to that awareness. When we connected to that, we have peace. Then we can gain clarity on what if anything we can do that will make a difference to the current situation.
There are different ways to re-centre and connect with your stillness. Try different things and see which works best for you.
We are not often experiencing circumstances but rather our thinking about those circumstances. Peace is always there for us when we drop out of the mind but we are often not present at the moment to experience it as we are caught in the minds expectation, predictions and judgments about what should be. Mundane repetitive activities like driving, ironing, being in the shower etc drop us out of the mind and a still space opens for us to receive inspiration and insight.
Which method for re-centring into stillness works for you?
When Silence Speaks
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Listen intently
Listen carefully
Resist the itch
To Interrupt and quit
Let it go deeper still
It comes from within the chasm
The place where the void exists
Can you hear it?
Inviting you deeper within
Way beyond the cursory notion
Past the well-trodden places
Where trite responses lie within reach
To the very depths
Where the treasure of unerring wisdom speaks
Hidden from the discomfort of noise
Offering up untainted undisturbed "truth"
Riches for those who take the time to listen
When silence speaks
Body language speaks volumes without uttering a sound, for those who have learned to listen with their eyes. It is a door to detecting incongruence between the conscious (spoken language) and the subconscious embodied clues.
There can be discomfort at silence because we have been conditioned to fill every sound void. Practising being in silence will help us build muscles for being in and relishing moments of silence where deep reflection, wisdom and insight can surface with ease.
Silence is a beautiful SPACE for healing and restoration.
The object of most addictions is to distract us from being with ourselves in silence and peace, accepting ourselves as able to handle the truth that we are enough and okay. The thing we run away from cannot consume us, but we only find that out when we stop running and sit with ourselves in silence. We are often forced into that silence by circumstance or ill health acting as circuit breakers so we can stop and listen when silence speaks.
Sleep is like the silence for the body to recuperate so we can have a sustainable existence. Silence is the sleep for the mind so that our sanity is sustainable.
Silence is the SPACE within which inspirations shows up to guide us to the option out of the infinite possibilities we should use focus to direct our energy on after taking the time to sharpen the axe and aim it at the root action that will deliver the desired outcome for us to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
Silence in this context is not the absence of thought but the absence of turbulent thought that leaves you feeling swept along and not okay. It is the SPACE where you are at peace, present and open to receive inspiration. It is counterproductive to try and make this happen and that involves the mind taking you out of the SPACE.
What did you learn about yourself, the last you sat in silence?
Winging It
By Frank Bolaji Irawo
Everyone is winging it
Not that you would know it
Some are great at fronting it
Pretending they were made for it
Truth is none has been
This way before
Like a swan paddling furiously
Some just so good at faking it
Don't be fooled by any of it
Every chance they feel as you do
Don't be afraid to admit your truth
Loaning them courage to say it too
Creativity implies some level of winging it but those in attendance must be clear that is what is happening. Winging it should not be a permanent strategy for masking a lack of due diligence and preparation, especially when there are consequences that could impact you and others negatively.
It is not always obvious when others are winging it, we tend to assume they are confident in every aspect of what they have done but all too aware of our feeling of uncertainty while doing similar things. The truth is often that most people feel the nerves, trust their preparation and wing their way to executing it.
Some wing it because they don't feel safe to admit they don't know, if you lead by admitting this, you give them the space to do the same and then you can all collaborate to find a way forward.
How do you feel when you find yourself "winging it"?
