Lucky One

Lucky One

By Frank Bolaji Irawo

What am I doing here?

Breathing in rarefied air

Operating above my station

Punching above my weight

Can’t help but feel I don’t belong here

They clearly could not find better

So, I guess I had to do

Feeling so grossly out of place

Purporting a picture of perfect grace

Belying the furious paddling beneath

Barely holding my own to Swans last seen

In the man-made lake outside

Must work harder to keep pace

Maybe they won’t notice

I’m out of place

Might be just easier

To fess up and vacate my space

A stroke of luck

A fortunate alignment of events

The question unasked, is how long it would take?

Before they discover

I am no more than an imposter

Showered with accolades I don't "deserve"

If only they knew what I knew

They most certainly would think the same

If it looks like a duck

If it quacks like a duck

If it swims like a duck

What are the chances it is a dog?

You worked, they saw

You persevered, they trusted

You delivered, they appreciated

You stayed the course, they promoted

Amazing how “lucky” you got

The harder you worked

A case of recurring mass delusion?

An ever repeating “fluke”?

What if you chose...

To suspend your unbelief

To walk in their boots

To see with their eyes

To question openly

To listen truthfully

To open up to the possibility

They clearly like what they see

If that is enough for them

Maybe it could be good enough for you
