Shifting Sand

Shifting Sand

By Frank Bolaji Irawo

Seemed like it should be solid

Enough to hold the weight

Of my long term expectations

Built from years of aspirations

In the moment of truth

When things were brought to bear

It began to shift, all not being as it seemed

Molding, shaping, and displacing

Not secure for building structures

Where to construct that tower of validation

To meet the demands of a growing ego

Thinking itself a fixed preposition

Exposed as a faltering shifting pile of sand

The greatest illusion of them all

A rank imposter so proud and tall

I am the crust beneath it all
