Work never fails

Work never fails

By Frank Bolaji Irawo

I went to work

There was work to do

That was the case

Yesterday too

Just when I thought

The end was due

The work grew

I worked hard

Then I worked harder

I worked a lot

Then I worked some more

In the misguided hope

The work will all be done

Someone just creates more

I once had a life

Outside of work

That was before

I gave it up

To finish the work

The all-consuming work

That has no end

There is a life

I left behind

That is a life

That has an end

Lived with those

Who may not be there

When I discover

There is too much work

At the end of life

On my tombstone

What will be said

Here lived the one

Who took on work

And lost the fight

Like all those

Who tried before

My only remorse

I did not realise sooner

Fit in the work

That leaves me room

To live the life

I won't regret
